The Visual Arts Department is proud to host professional illustration artist Ryan Kim during the month of August. Class of 2012 graduate Ryan Kim is an up and coming artist, featured in numerous print publications, and art shows throughout North America."My work looks to capture the attitudes of the nonsensical universe by depicting deformed figures in an ironically welcoming palette", said Ryan. Ryan is guest lecturing in the grade 8-12 visual arts courses (MYP, DP, 3D Art, and Drawing and Painting), and is offering After school workshops with students. He is also spending time with the elementary students in grade 5 answering any and all art questions they may have. GSIS art students have been very excited to have Ryan on campus and have found his presence to be invaluable. Sae Takeuchi, a DP Year 1 art student said, Ryan helped her understand how to utilise dominance in her artwork. Sae was working on drawing an octopus, but it was a bit boring. Ryan challenged her to manipulate scale, so she could produce a more visually dynamic artwork. Junior, Rose Kim, who plans to attend art university, noticed “even after he graduated school, he consistently used his own process journal and inspired me to do similar projects in the future.” Ryan Kim (HRYANSKIM) is based out of New York City. Ryan received his BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts.
